Research & Clinical Plan 2006 – 2008

Research

The research plan for 2006-2008 relates key infrastructure developments (such as molecular imaging and animal behaviour facilities) to two key streams of clinical activities based on the alleviation of premature death and disability.

Mental illness and substance abuse in younger persons:
  • NHMRC Program and CCRE Grants investigating efficacy of clinical interventions at early stages of major mental disorders in persons 12 to 25 years.
  • Expansion of basic and clinical sciences investigating effects of substance abuse on cognitive and emotional development.
Degeneration or injury to the nervous system in older persons:
  • Development of genetically-modified mouse models of Alzheimer disease.
  • Development of prion disease models of neurodegeneration.
  • Development of neuroinflammatory models of multiple sclerosis.
  • Development of vascular disease models of later-life depression and cognitive impairment.
Clinical

The clinical services plan for 2006-2008 involves the development at the BMRI of the following key clinical programs:

  • National Youth Mental Health Foundation
  • Management of bipolar and severe depressive disorders
  • Management of treatment-resistant psychotic disorders
  • Behavioural and cognitive aspects of dementia
  • Treatment of multiple sclerosis
  • Human advanced neuroimaging for diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Evaluation, research and treatment of neurosurgical disorders including:
    • Complex brain and spinal cord tumours
    • Brain and spinal cord blood vessel disorders such as aneurysm, AVM and cavernoma
    • Carotid artery disease including carotid stenosis and aneurysm
    • Degenerative spinal disease
    • Movement disorders and spasticity
